Description
This photograph shows how mechanized the fruit processing had become by the 1930's. Visible overhead toward the right of the photo is part of the pulley system used to operate the conveyer belts that are set up in perpendicular rows. The women are seated along each conveyer belt with an empty wooden box next to them. The fruit (peaches) would come down the conveyer belts and the women would pick out the best, pack them into cardboard trays (to protect the fruit) which were stacked into the boxes that were then shipped to market. The man in the photo probably was the one who kept the boxes, trays and peaches moving along the conveyers with as few problems as possible. The women typically were paid a set amount for each box they packed and they needed the conveyer belts to work properly and efficiently.
