The Society of California Pioneers Christian Reis moved with his family to Texas in 1845 from Posen in Saxony. In March 1849, Christian and his two brothers joined a company of about one hundred families on their long overland journey to California. They reached Los Angeles on August 4th, 1849 after having passed through San Antonio, El Paso, Tucson, and Yuma. From there the Reis brothers pushed on the Mariposa region where they began their career as miners. In December 1849, they proceeded to Stockton and invested in a train of pack mules and began packing provisions to the mines. They then made Marysville their field of operation and continued there until July 1850, when they established a trading business at Downiesville in Sierra County. They kept that mercantile business until 1857. They then established a banking house in Downiesville which they operated until 1861. They also became chief owners of the great Sierra Butte Mine. In San Francisco, the Reis brothers entered into the banking business on Montgomery Street, and also built the Cosmopolitan Hotel. In 1870 they sold out their mining interests and Christian Reis devoted his time to real estate. He was elected as City Treasurer in 1862 and 1888, and a member of the Board of Supervisors in 1893 Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 123-126, Vol. 2. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes. It appears that the photographs in this set were dispersed throughout the regular photography collection, but the photographs referenced in the related materials may or may not be these same photographs. This reminiscence covers the period of Reis' life from 1845 to 1893. It gives some details concerning his overland journey to California from Texas, and provides his history in the mines and his later work as a business man. It briefly mentions his witnessing of a woman being hanged in Downiesville.
