Description
Turlock's commerce began with one general merchandise store in 1871. This photograph depicts the transition of businesses from offering a general inventory toward specialization. The store on the left side of West Main Street sells both groceries and furniture. Across the street, the business sign indicates that Seth Williams specializes in cloaks and suits. The store presumably also offers women's clothing as there are white shirtwaist(blouses) on display in the window. Note the power poles that line the left side of the street indicating electricity is available at this time period, however a paved street is still in the future.
