Great Britain, Scotland, Edinburgh: Edinburgh castle atop Castle Rock with Princes Gardens in the foreground. The rock at the western end of the old town was undoubtedly the site of an early settlement in the days of the Pictish kings and in the 7th century a military post was established here by Edwin, first Christian King of Northumbria. The great rock rises more than 400 feet above sea level and was once surrounding by a low-lying marshy stretch known an old nor' loch. in 1816 this was drained and from it has evolved the lovely public gardens (Princes Gardens) flanked by Princes Street
