Permission for publication is given on behalf of The Society of California Pioneers as the owner of the physical items and is not intended to include or imply permission of the copyright holder, which must be obtained by the reader Autobiography & Reminiscence of Henry Hathaway Lawrence, (Deceased), 1901. The Society of California Pioneers Henry H. Lawrence was born in Yates County, New York on October 3rd, 1825. After completing his studies the young Mr. Lawrence engaged in mercantile pursuits. In December 1848 he removed to New York City. On the 1st of February 1849, Mr. Lawrence embarked on the Steamer "Falcon" bound for Panama. In Panama he boarded the bark "Equator", and arrived in San Francisco on June 16th, 1849. He first went to the mines on Wood's Creek, near Sonora, and then on Tuolumne River. After not meeting with much success Mr. Lawrence returned to San Francisco and then settled in Napa. In 1850 Mr. Lawrence was elected County Clerk and Recorder of Napa County. He also opened the first store in Napa's business district. Mr. Lawrence was appointed delegate to the first World's Fair in New York City in 1853. In March 1854 he was appointed Conductor of the San Francisco Mint. He was soon promoted to the Assay Department, and would later serve as Chief Assayer Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 164-168, Vol. 4. This is a typed transcript of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's biographical file. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes, but there is no longer a photograph of this member in our collection. Following this biography is a note stating that "the above was copied from the book, Master Hands published in 1892". This reminiscence provides information regarding the subject's family history, as well as biographical information regarding his life in California. Work history is included as is information regarding his civic and religious affiliations.
