Description
Creek and fallen tree at Double Gates in Bear Valley, Marin County. This image is included in an album documenting the Country Club at Bear Valley. Established in 1890, the Country Club at Bear Valley was one of the oldest hunting clubs in Northern California. The Bear Valley area of Point Reyes provided abundant wildlife and proximity to Tomales Bay and its tributary streams. Popular activities included hunting, fishing, and trapshooting. Featured were a clubhouse, kennels, stables, and lakes in which to fish. The Country Club flourished in the 1920s, but was financially devastated by the arrival of the Great Depression, which left its members vulnerable. The clubhouse stood until the early 1950s, when it was torn down by its owner. This photgraph is from an album, probably one of a limited number put together for club members, dating from circa 1890-1895.
