Description
Rochester Hotel, begun in 1887 by builder Major E.A. Warner and designed by local architect C.B. Bradshaw, located on the southwest corner of West Chapman Avenue and South Lemon Street, in Orange, California. Image shows corner view taken ca. 1907 from the northeast of the three-story brick hotel, with power lines and power pole in foreground. Signage over entranceway along right side of building reads, "THE ROCHESTER / ROOMS FURNISHED AND UNFURNISHED." After failure of tourist industry, the building was sold in 1889 to Rev. J.H. Harwood and converted into the Orange County Collegiate Institute, the county's first college, which operated from 1889- 1891. It operated as a hotel until it was raized in June, 1931, on the current site of the Orange Post Office which opened in 1935.
