Description
On neg: "Headquarters Smith Creek, Mt. Hamilton Rd." On back: "Building road to Mt. Hamilton." Group of men lined up on left, with two men on horseback in front of them. One of the horses is wearing a blanket. Several men are seated outside a tent labeled "Headquarters." A wagon is seen on the right with supplies. Featured on page 6 of Connie Young Yu's "Chinatown, San Jose, U.S.A." with caption: Headquarters for the Chinese road building crew at Smith Creek on the Mt. Hamilton Road, San Jose c. 1876. Chinese men on horseback may have been the foremen.
