Mabry McMahan was real estate developer and business man until his death at age 94 in 1958. He served as president of the California State Realty Federation, a forerunner of the California Real Estate Association. This image is from a brochure published in 1914 by Mabry McMahan to promote his Santa Venetia (Marin County) development plan. McMahan was responsible for filling in Santa Venetia's marshland and creating a series of canals, on which he hoped to create a luxury subdivision modeled after the Italian city of Venice. McMahan's plans failed to be realized due to the economic hardships of WWI. After WWII, San Venetia was developed into one of San Rafael's residential neighborhoods, although not in the style envisioned by McMahan.
