Description
Passengers arrive at Mill Valley in 1937, via the Northwestern Pacific Railroad, and prepare for the six-mile hike to the Mountain Theater, site of the Mountain Play, atop Mount Tamalpais. The play at this time was Thunder of Paradise, written for the Mountain Play Association by Cecil James Cook, and set in Hawaii during the time the playwright's' ancestor, Captain James Cook, explored the island. The Mountain Play Association began its annual production in an outdoor amphitheater on top of Mount Tamalpais, Marin County, in 1913. Shows run for several weekends, beginning each May. This image is from a collection of scrapbooks, deposited with the California Room in 1975, by Mountain Play Association Director, Marion Hayes Cain.
