Description
Emerson Knight, landscape engineer for the Mountain Theater, pictured on Mount Tamalpais, circa 1934. Knight was a Marin County resident who worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps to convert the natural outdoor amphitheater on Mt. Tamalpais to a 5000 seat terraced amphitheater. In addition to indigenous stone seats, the project included installation of drainage and water systems, grading, aisles, stone walls, and ramps, as well as the planting of native trees, shrubs and grasses. Construction began in 1936. The Mountain Play Association began its annual production at the Mountain Theater in 1913. Shows run for several weekends, beginning each May. This image is from a collection of scrapbooks, deposited with the California Room in 1975, by Mountain Play Association Director, Marion Hayes Cain.
