Description
The Mountain Theater, on Mount Tamalpais, as it appeared in its first year, 1913. Three men are credited for the inspiration for the Mountain play: lawyer and hiker, John C. Catlin; producer and director, Garnet Holme; and long-time hiker, Dad O'Rourke. Hiking in the Rock Springs area of Mount Tamalpais, Mr. Holme was inspired by the view from this part of the mountain, and saw a perfect setting for play performances in a natural outdoor amphitheater. The Mountain Play Association began its annual production in an outdoor amphitheater on top of Mount Tamalpais, Marin County, in 1913. Shows run for several weekends beginning each May.
