Description
Black and white photographic print of an advertisement for the city of Mission Viejo and the sports facilities which allowed the city to host the television program "Challenge of the Sexes." In the center of the advertisement is an illustration of a female athlete and a male athlete in a face-to-face stand-off kind of stance. Around this illustration is the text of the advertisement, an illustration of a television set with "CBS, Channel 2" on the screen, and a small map showing the major streets and location of the Information Center of Mission Viejo. The text of the advertisement reads, "'Challenge of the Sexes' happened in Mission Viejo. 'The Challege of the Sexes' is CBS-TV's exciting new concept in sports, where on national television, the best male and female athletes in the world compete against each other for the first time. The first thing the production company, Trans World International, needed was outstanding facilities. The kind that top athletes demand. And to find them, they came to Mission Viejo, one of the few places in the country to offer a wide range of excellent sport facilities so close to each other - four competition swimming pools (one Olympic-sized), two golf courses (one private - one public), three very impressive 3.5 milion dollar membership recreation centers, 24 tennis courts, night-lighted basketball and volleyball courts, indoor handball courts, equestrian center, bowling alley, skateway and field/track facilities. 'The Challenge of the Sexes' brought together such top athletes as: Laura Baugh and Jane Blalock vs. Doug Saunders and Hale Irwin, golf; Virginia Wade and Evonne Goolagong vs. Bjorn Borg and Ilie Nastase, tennis; Jerry West vs. Karen Logan, basketball; Micki King and Keena Rothammer vs. Don Schollander and Ken Sitzberger, swimming/diving; Judy Soutar and Paula Sperber vs. Dave Davis and Carmen Salvino, bowling; Linda Metheny vs. Makoto Sakamoto, gymnastics; Sheila Bussey vs. Larry Mahan, rodeo; In-sook Na vs. Danny Seemiller, table tennis; Jean Balukas vs. Willie Mosconi, pocket billiards; and the obstacle course with Wyomia Tyus Simburg vs. Bob Seagren. They all came to compete, and we think you might be surprised at some of the outcomes, to be aired Saturday afternoons, starting January 10th at 4:30 p.m. as part of CBS-TV's "Sports Spectacular." Naturally, we were delighted to host 'The Challenge of the Sexes' and have top athletes come to Mission Viejo to experience first-hand what Mission Viejo residents experience daily. In adddition, Mission Viejo hosts the 'Women's Pro Tennis Classic,' the 'International Swimming Championships,' and is also the home of the National AAU Champion Nadadores, with Mark Schubert, Coach of the Year. Mission Viejo - where the best in recreation and leisure time is an everyday happening. (714) 837-6050. It happens in Mission Viejo." In the bottom margin of the print is, "Equal Housing Opportunities By Mission Viejo Company, Builders of America's Most Successful New Communities. Job #A76-011, 8 col. x 13 1/4", L.A. Times, Jan. 11, 1976."
