Description
Pictured are a group of men in front of Billy Shannon's Villa, in San Rafael, California, circa 1912. From about 1906 to 1914, Shannon's Villa was a saloon and training facility located on a triangular lot at the west end of Fourth Street. Shannon was a former amateur lightweight champion who later turned professional. He operated the Villa as a combination restaurant-bar and training camp, which held a small ring featuring popular exhibition prizefights. Shannon is standing, fourth from the right. Frankie Burns, a lightweight fighter from Oakland, California, is pictured fourth from the left.
