Description
Ella McSpedden as Tamalpa and Lucille Gordon as Ah-Shawn-Nee, in a publicity photograph for the 1938 Mountain Play, Tamalpa, by Dan Totheroh. Tamalpa explains the geologic formation of Mt. Tamalpais with the legend of a sleeping maiden. The play was so popular that it was performed for eight seasons: 1921, 1923, 1938, 1946, 1953, 1957, 1963, and 1970. The Mountain Play Association began its annual production in an outdoor amphitheater on top of Mount Tamalpais, Marin County, in 1913. Shows run for several weekends, beginning each May. This image is from a collection of scrapbooks, deposited with the California Room in 1975, by Mountain Play Association Director, Marion Hayes Cain.
