Description
Pictured here is the second Tavern of Tamalpais on the summit of Mt. Tam, which was built in 1924 after a fire destroyed the first in 1923. This tavern remained in operation until World War II. The Tavern was famous throughout the Bay Area for its fine dining room and comfortable accommodations. The Mt. Tamalpais and Mill Valley Railroad (which ran from 1896 until 1929) transported visitors from downtown Mill Valley, California up to the Tavern. Once at the top, visitors could take a gravity car down the mountain. Each gravity car was equipped with brakes, a brakeman and over 20 seats for the passengers.
