Autobiography & Reminiscence of Arthur Mercien Ebbets, San Francisco, 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Arthur M. Ebbets was born in New York, January 18, 1830. He left there on January 22, 1849, on the ship "Pacific". He arrived in San Francisco on August 5, 1849 after a voyage of 195 days during which his ship stopped at Rio de Janeiro and Callao. Upon arrival in San Francisco he purchased some land and built a house for a store and home. He eventually owned numerous properties. He was involved in the shipping and commission industry, insurance and adjustment, and the coal trade. He took part in all the Vigilance Committees. He was Mayor of San Francisco for 48 hours on the death of Jas' Oris (fulfilling the office as Chairman of the Finance Commission Board of Supervisors). He was Recorder and Dep. Assessor, President of the Mercantile Library and Sportsman Club of California, and Vice President of the Pacific Yacht Club. He died on May 5, 1903 in Alameda, Alameda Co., California
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p.81-83, Vol. 1. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's Biographical File. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes. It appears that the photographs in this set were dispersed throughout the regular photography collection, but the photographs referenced in the related materials may or may not be these same photographs. This reminiscence covers the period of Arthur M. Ebbets' life from 1849 to 1901. It briefly details his voyage to California as well as his various business enterprises. This reminiscence has detailed information concerning addresses and locations of his multiple properties.
