Description
This is a chapter from an oral history of UCSB emeritus faculty and plant anatomist Katherine Esau, conducted by librarian David Russell. The chapter includes an autobiography of Esau's father, Johan Esau, that describes his life as a Mennonite of German descent in Russia from 1869 to 1922 when he brought his family to California. Topics covered include local politics in Ekaterinoslav, Ukraine (he was mayor) and national politics and the revolutions of 1905 and 1917. Katherine Esau reflects on her childhood in Russia, her family's escape to Germany during the Russian Revolution, and her education in Germany.
