Autobiography & Reminiscence of Francis William Faulkner, Norwich, Connecticut, 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Faulkner, born in Norwich, Connecticut, August 4, 1830, made his first sea voyage at 13. He came to San Francisco May 1849 on the "Trescott" headed by Capt. Mallory and sailing from Mystic, Connecticut. He sailed with his father and brother, the trip lasting 7 months. Faulkner's father brought a printing business with him and established it in S.F. on the corner of Jackson and Kearney Streets. Faulkner worked in the Pacific News Office as a printer. He discontinued that, worked for "Gordon and Steen" as a handyman in their foundry and then as a steward on the old "Pacific" and "Uncle Sam". After voyages up and down the coast, Faulkner returned east in 1854. In Conn., Faulkner worked on a steamer, the "Cazene". He was working as a compositor for the "New York Herald" and then the "New York World"(1861) when he went back to Conn. and enlisted in Co. D. 3rd Conn. Vols. He was in the battle of Bull Run. On Aug. 12, 1862 he enlisted in the 15th Regiment Conn. Vols., and 9th Army Corps. He was captured at Wise Forks, North Carolina on the advance to meet Sherman. He went to Libbey Prison, and left 2 days before it surrendered to the Union forces. Eventually he went back to S.F.(1867) working as clerk in his family's foundry remaining there until he went to China on the "Great Republic". Faulkner and 11 others went on a gold-hunting expedition to the Okhotsk Sea and used a schooner that was "the smallest vessel that ever crossed the Pacific (Elanor).
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p.87-91, Vol. 1. This is a typed transcript, bouind into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's Biographical File. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes. It appears that the photographs in this set were dispersed throughout the regular photography collection, but the photographs referenced in the related materials may or may not be these same photographs. This reminiscence covers the period from about 1849 to 1879. It begins with a description of Avery's passage to San Francisco in 1849 and then details his later sea voyages. Faulkner was enlisted in the army during the Civil War and the text mentions some of the hardships encountered.
