Description
A view from First Street, looks across the double sets of railroad tracks and up East Main Street. The Hultberg and Lane brick building on the left is across Front Street from the white annex of the Turlock Hotel. The large wooden tower holds the fire alarm system. The bell at the top would be rung to alert the volunteer firemen that there was a fire somwhere. In the photo, a portion of the melon (and grape) shipping process is depicted. Part of the long line of full and then emptied wagons can be seen. Full wagons were so numerous and because each also needed space for their horses, a circuitous route through Turlock was created. The farmers entered town on the northern end, traveled south on Front Street, then turned west and turned again back north along the railroad tracks until their wagons were unloaded. The horse teams pulled the empty wagons west across the railroad tracks, traveled south on First Street and then back across the tracks moving east on Main Street, and finally turned south onto Front Street to leave Turlock.
