Description
Content/DescriptionThe Panama railroad was built across the Isthmus of Panama by William Henry Aspinwall from 1850-52. The town of Aspinwall was established in 1852 and served as its western terminus when the railroad was finished. The railroad carried many miners to California during the gold rush and was the fastest shipping route between New York and San Francisco before transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869.
Content/DescriptionView of a train engine and car crossing a body of water in Aspinwall (later renamed Colon) Panama. The turnaround is visible in the foreground and a church with a classical façade stands on a hill with the town beyond.
