Description
Depicts may pole dancers at the Tamalpais Centre, Kentfield, California. May Day, 1909, marked the opening of the Tamalpais Centre, a gift of Mrs. A.E. Kent, to Marin County, located on 29 acres of land at the foot of Mt. Tamalpais. The intent of the Tamalpais Centre was to provide educational and recreational opportunities for Marin County residents. One of the most popular events at the Tamalpais Centre was the annual May Day celebration and may pole competition in which all the southern Marin schools participated. There were races and sporting events and a Queen of the May. The children wore white dresses and white shirts with colored ribbons to designate their school.
