Description
Nisaburo Aibara received the Medal of the Order of the Sacred Treasure from the Japanese government for his service to his fellow Japanese of Stanislaus County, California. He was born in Yamanashi Ken, Japan on January 1, 1870, and trained at the School of Veterinary Medicine in Tokyo, where he practiced until immigrating to the United States in 1896. He moved to Turlock, California in 1913 and organized the Stanislaus County Japanese Association, served as its president and as a liaison between the Caucasians and the Japanese. Mr. Aibara formed the California Canaloupe Corporation to lease land for Japanese farmers who were excluded from land ownership and citizenship until after WWII. For almost twenty years he also taught the Japanese language to the second and third generations of children. Mr. Aibara died February 10, 1973, at the age of 103.
