Description
Photograph shows metal cut-out banners of women welders and riveters on lamp-posts along Macdonald Avenue near San Pablo Avenue. The powder-coated aluminum banners were made by Bay Area artist, Horace Washington. The images were based on actual photographs taken at the Kaiser shipyards during World War II. The artist used photos as his initial shapes for the figures, which were then water-jet cut, painted, and assembled like parts of a paper doll.
