Description
Seen here are John McLaren (Superintendent of Golden Gate Park and Landscape Architect for the P.P.I.E.), and party returning from Santa Venetia's Redwood Trail. This image is from a promotional brochure published in 1914 by Mabry McMahan to promote his Santa Venetia (Marin County) development plan. McMahan was responsible for filling in Santa Venetia's marshland and creating a series of canals, on which he hoped to build a luxury subdivision modeled after the Italian city of Venice. McMahan's plans failed to be realized due to the economic hardships of WWI. After WWII, San Venetia was developed into one of San Rafael's residential neighborhoods, although not in the style envisioned by McMahan.
