Description
St. John's Lutheran Church, located at 185 South Center Street at East Almond Avenue, Orange, California, 2003. Image shows front view of the Gothic Revival church which was designed by architect C. B. Bradshaw and constructed in 1914 by the Orange Contracting and Milling Company. St. John's Lutheran Church is a large brick structure fashioned in a gothic tradition, distinguished by a large corner steeple and a second smaller one on the opposite corner, connected by a gable between the two steeples. Each steeple is a rectilinear formation topped with battlements, a high tent roof and a cross. The larger steeple contains a large pointed arch vent with a clock face. The main entry is composed of a three-part compound pointed arched portal with moulded archivolts and ornamental capitals on the pilasters. The upper portion of these and other similar doors on the building feature trefoil and quatrefoil tracery of stained glass. A large pointed Gothic arch stained glass window is above the main entry and repeated again on the sides of the building. A photograph of the church was featured on page 3 of "Beautiful Orange Homes," a promotional brochure from the early 1920s that featured examples of design and construction by Orange Contracting & Milling Company. Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, with the Community Music Conservatory and Walker Hall. Digital image Color 3000 x 2000 pixels
