Description
Trumbull's Nursery in San Rafael, California. Robert J. Trumbull established this nursery in the western portion of San Rafael in the 1870s. The illustration notes the nursery was located on Culloden Avenue and Center Street. Culloden Avenue no longer exists, but the nursery was near modern day Center and J Streets in the Sun Valley neighborhood. This illustration is from a brochure titled San Rafael Illustrated and Described, published by W.W. Elliott & Co., in 1884. The brochure shows images of early San Rafael and was designed as a promotional piece, meant to attract new residents and investors to Marin County's most populous town. The original lithographs were made from the sketches of Mr. Chris Jorgensen, a teacher at the San Francisco Art School and noted artist.
