Autobiography & Reminiscence of Andrew Jackson Roulstone, East Oakland, 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Andrew Jackson Roulstone was born in Charlestown, Ma. Nov. 15, 1828. On April 10, 1849, Roulstone and a company of 20 set sail on the brig "Vesta". They had to make a stop in the Cape Verde Islands for repairs, and then proceeded to round Cape Horn and stop in Callao. While on their journey they hunted whales. They arrived in San Francisco on November 30, 1849 after a voyage of 185 days. Roulstone spent his first four months in San Francisco on board his company's ship finding work doing various odd jobs. After four months he left his company and went with three others to the Middle Bar of the Mokelumne River. After a short while spent mining, Roulstone decided to go into business sharpening miners' tools. After a few months of that, Roulstone went back to mining on Rich Gulch and stayed there until 1850 when he returned back East. In 1852, Roulstone went back to California and resumed his blacksmith business in Mokelumne Hill. He was contracted for the iron work for the first bridge to cross the Mokelumne in Amador County and then another that crossed at Camp Seco, Calaveras County. He remained in the blacksmith business until 1855. In 1856, Roulstone was hired as a Salesman with the firm of George C. Paterson, Wholesale Grocers. He later bought an interest in a shipping business which he maintained until 1859 when he returned east
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 87-92, Vol. 2. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's biographical file. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes, but there is no longer a photograph of this member in our collection. This reminiscence describes Roulstone's journey to California via Cape Horn on a whaling ship. It covers the period from 1849 to 1859. Some attention is given to details like costs of provisions and travel fares.
