The Society of California Pioneers Alexander Campbell was born on February 8, 1820 on the island of Jamaica. He arrived in California on August 7, 1849 on the Barque Peytona after a journey around Cape Horn. His occupation was the practice of law. Mr. Campbell died in Los Angeles on July 6, 1911 Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 1-14, Vol. 8. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. This reminiscence is a transcript of an address delivered by Alexander Campbell before the Bar Association of Los Angeles. The subject of the address is the history of California and the role lawyers played in the state's development. The author names some lawyers that were early immigrants to California.
