Description
Accession number: P3924 The large glass bottle was called a "carboy" and was generally protected by a wicker basket or packed in straw in a box. Acid used for fumigating citrus trees came in these carboys. The earthen pot was used for fumigation. Large canvas tents were placed over the trees, a measured amount of water & acid were put in the earthen pot. The pot was then placed under the tent & the cyanide was dropped into the pot. This formed a very deadly gas to kill scale & other insects. The image background is an Orange Grove (the grove is not identified). On the left side of photograph, sitting on a wooden plank, is an earthen pot and a Carboy bottle.
