Description
Modjeska home, "Arden", Santiago Canyon, California. Image shows frontal view of canyon retreat of the Polish actress, Helen Modjeska and her husband, Karol Bozenta Chlapowski. Purchased in 1888 from Joseph and Maria Refugio Pleasants, Madame Modjeska hired New York architect Stanford White to design an addition to the Pleasants' pioneer cabin, and named the house "Arden" for Shakespeare's Forest of Arden, the setting for his pastoral play, "As You Like It." In 1906 the house was sold, just before the actress's final theatrical tour. After being privately owned for many years, the historic home was designated a National Historic Landmark and now belongs to the County of Orange.
