Description
An unidentified group of people stand in front of the Fountain Hotel & Store that was located next to the railroad tracks at First and West Main Streets in Turlock, California. Charles Lander had a small store at this location. The roof was removed and the store was integrated into the new construction of the hotel. John W. Mitchell, the founder of Turlock, had the hotel built and named it The Fountain Hotel for the fountain in its inner court. Windmills pumped water to three large wooden holding tanks and their height provided running water to a marble washstand with brass fixtures in each room of the hotel. Note the signage indicating the wide variety of goods for sale in the general store. The Fountain Hotel was torn down in 1901 and the St. Elmo Hotel was constructed on the site by 1908.
