Description
Looking down on the Ralston L. White Retreat and the Garden of Allah in Blithedale Canyon from the the Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway tracks. Richardson's Bay and San Francisco are seen in the distance. The old bridge across Richardson's Bay is visible prior to the building of the freeway and present bridge. White, the son of Lovell White, the founder of Mill Valley, built the house in 1915 and called the area the "Garden of Allah" after reading Robert Hitchens' popular romantic novel, "The Garden of Allah." The Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway built a special spur from the mainlines to transport materials to the construction site. White died in 1943.
