Description
Photograph of a twin trunk Coastal Redwood tree named "El Palo Alto" (the tall stick) standing on the banks of San Francisquito Creek in Palo Alto. Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola camped under this redwood in November 1769. Indians, travelers, and settlers used the tree as a landmark. One of the two trunks fell or was removed in the 1880s. The other still stands today, and is thought to be over 1000 years old. The tree is the official symbol of the City of Palo Alto.
