Description
The mural, “Puzzled Pelican"" by John J. Whalen of Wall-It Graphics was commissioned by the Coronado Council for Humanities and Arts in 1982 after his concept was selected in a juried competition. The main elements of the mural are the California brown pelican, an endangered species, the sun, repeated several times signifying the unique location of Coronado where the sun rises and sets over water, and the artist’s symbolic concept of the jigsaw puzzle of life. The varying shades of blue in the background of the puzzle are representative of the sea and sky. This mural was demolished during the 2004 renovation of the High School.
