The Society of California Pioneers Fritz Boehmer was born on May 15, 1831 in Magdeburg, Prussia. On March 21, 1849, he and his brother set sail for California with the firm "Pajeken and Frisius". They entered the Golden Gate on September 15, 1849. A few days after their arrival they took passage for Stockton, and then traveled on to Mokelumne Hill. After a brief stint at mining, Mr. Boehmer returned to San Francisco and began work in a blacksmith shop, and then carpenter work with his brother. After the fire in San Francisco in 1849-1850, he moved close to Sacramento and built a house which he would soon abandon after a devastating flood. He mined for a while before returning to San Francisco after the fire of June 1850 to work in construction, rebuilding damaged properties. In 1851 he and a partner bought a 160-acre ranch in Contra Costa County, which they sold in 1852. Mr. Boehmer operated a mill, a mine, and a hotel and store in Alameda County Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 141-169, Vol. 7. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes. It appears that the photographs in this set were dispersed throughout the regular photography collection, but the photographs referenced in the related materials may or may not be these same photographs. This reminiscence provides a detailed and poetic account of Fritz Boehmer's 1849 adventurous journey from Germany to California. Also provided is some background family history as well as Mr. Boehmer's employment history. The author also goes into detail regarding his impressions of San Francisco and Sacramento. Included are many anecdotes relating to the author's experiences mining, ranching, and conducting business. One especially vivid account is provided detailing the author's battle with a "lawless gang of land grabbers" that had come to take his land. The time period represented by this reminiscence is from 1848 to 1901.
