Description
Newsletter of the Submarine Church, Vol 2, No.4., Dec 19, 1969. The main article reports actions of the Free Church at the National Council of Churches (NCC) Triennial meeting. A second article reports the speech of Dave Hilliard, chief of staff of the Black Panthers, to a convocation in Berkeley. At one NCC session, following the failure of a resolution to accept the draft card of a war protester, Richard York shouted, "This is despicable. The blood of the Vietnamese and Americans is dripping from the minutes and from our hands. By God, wash off the blood of your brothers." He then threw red paint across the work table of the National Council of Churches officials, splashing the suit of the outgoing president, Rev. Arthur Walmsley. This was the first issue of the Submarine Church Press, replacing the Liberated Church Press. The national Convention of Liberated Churches took responsibility for the paper beginning in October 1969. Tony Nugent and Glenn Clark continued to edit the paper until the end of the year. For the next few years responsibility for printing the paper rotated to groups in different metropolitan areas.
