Autobiography & Reminiscence of John August Mack and Albert Christian Mack, San Francisco, 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Albert Christian and John August Mack were born in Winnenden, Germany. John August came to America in 1848 and Albert Christian in 1844. The brothers left New York for California on December 22, 1848, on the steamer "Orus", stopping at Panama they boarded the steamer "California" and arrived in San Francisco on February 28, 1849. They soon sailed on a schooner to Sonoma via Benicia. J.A. Mack went on to Stockton then to Woods Creek diggings. With mining proceeds the brothers opened a store in Big Oak Flat (then called Camp Savage) and by 1856 were part owners in four others. In 1857 A.C. Mack became Supervisor for Tuolumne County. In 1859 the brothers incorporated the "Golden Rock Water Company" to bring water from the South Fork of Tuolumne River to Oak Flat and surrounding camps but the company was later sold. In 1861 A.C. Mack opened the first store in Aurora Camp, Nevada and in 1862 Aurora was incorporated as a city with A.C. Mack elected President of the Board of Trustees. A.C. Mack also became an experienced ore assayer and prospector, but in 1876 he sold all of his holdings, except for an extension of the Comanche mine. From 1878-1882 he operated a lumber business, supplying timber to Nevada camps. Around 1884 A.C. Mack opened a drugstore in S. F. with a nephew, but sold his interest in 1891
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 69-90, Vol. 6. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volme, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's biographical file. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes, but there is no longer a photograph of this member in our collection. This reminiscence was written by Albert Christian Mack on behalf of himself and his brother, John August Mack but focuses more Albert's life. The account details the brothers' lives mining and prospecting as well as A.C. Mack's silver mines and assaying experience. This biography spans from 1844-1901.
