The Society of California Pioneers Captain Samuel Tyler was born in Erie, PA, June 16, 1816. At an early age he began work in the Foundry and Machine business and continued in that line of work until 1842. He then commenced building ferry boats for the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers; building and establishing the first steam ferry boats on the Ohio. On March 2, 1849 Captain Tyler resolved to make the journey to California. He sailed on the steamer "Alabama" to Panama and then boarded the steamer "Panama" on its first voyage to California. He arrived in San Francisco on June 4th, 1849. He made a brief trip to the mines and then returned to Sacramento, where he engaged in the Real Estate business until January 1850. He then went back east and soon returned to California, bringing with him the first Quartz Mill ever introduced in the state. He also constructed "Lows Wharf". He was Superintendent and Agent of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company in Acapulco, Mexico and Benicia, California, as well as Superintendent of the Arizona Copper Manufacturing Company. He profited from being one of the original locators of the Silver District of Esmeralda, and furthered his success by investing in the silver region of Virginia City, Nevada Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 174-178, Vol. 2. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. This reminiscence provides an account of Captain Tyler's many accomplishments in his field of mining and mechanical engineering. Included is a list of some of the ships he worked to restore. Tyler provides a list of some of the passengers he traveled with on the steamer "Panama" on its first voyage to California.
