Description
Orange streetcar "Orange Dummy, " Orange, California, ca. 1900. Image shows view of Mr. Tolle, conductor, standing on the steam-powered streetcar "Orange Dummy" (a railroad term for the street-locomotive), also known as the Peanut Roaster for its shrill whistle, which was built by the Tolle brothers who bought and operated the line and ran the streetcar beginning in 1896 from Orange to Santa Ana. Written on back of original postcard by Florence Flippen Smiley: "Peanut Roaster" Mr. Toll [e] Orange, Cal. about 1903. Ran between Santa Ana and Orange. Many students from Orange rode to the Santa Ana high school on North Main Street Santa Ana"
