Autobiography & Reminiscence of Charles Camden, Oakland, 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Charles Camden was born in Aston Magna Worcestershire, England, on January 29, 1817. When he was seventeen he left home and sailed from Liverpool to New York, arriving on October 1, 1834. He spent the years from 1834 to 1844 living and working in Ohio, Texas, and Louisiana. In the spring of 1845, Mr. Camden left Louisiana for New York in hopes of procuring passage to California. It was on August 13th of 1845 that Mr. Camden was able to secure the opportunity on board the ship "Mississippi" leaving from Baltimore. He arrived in Valparaiso, Chile on Christmas Day, 1845, and remained there for approximately eighteen months assisting a preliminary survey for a railroad from Valparaiso to Santiago. He then traveled to Callao and Lima, Peru, where he was engaged in helping to erect the first paper mill on the Pacific Coast. In August of 1849, Mr. Camden sailed from Callao in the Peruvian ship "Empressa" and landed in San Francisco on October 2, 1849. In California, Mr. Camden was engaged in mining. He also built stores in Shasta County, and was the owner of the "Iron Mountain Mine". Mr. Camden was responsible for building the "Camden Turnpike" from Shasta to the Tower House, water ditches, and a saw mill for lumber supply
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 4-6, Vol. 6. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's biographical file. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes, but there is no longer a photograph of this member in our collection. This brief reminiscence serves as an outline of Charles Camden's life. It provides dates of travel and lists some of his achievements in South America and Shasta County, California.
