Description
Photograph of the prosperous Crane family outside of their residence with a small dog watching the boys. Mr. and Mrs. Crane are seated in a buggy harnessed to a matched pair of buckskin (dark mane and tail with a light coat) horses. The long building at the back was one of two large barns where their carriage horses and some of the farm animals would have been sheltered and fed and the carriages and harvested grain and hay stored. The pump house between the house and the barn protected the pump machinery, provided access to the well and space for cool storaage of eggs, milk and butter. A water tank was kept on the second floor so the height allowed the pull of gravity to get water to the house. Verso: Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Crane and the Crane brothers (Horace, Frank, John) the oldest born in 1866. The Crane residence at the corner of Crane and Center, 1876.
