Autobiography & Reminiscence of Candido Guiterrez, Golden Gate-Alameda Co., 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Candido Guiterrez was born in the Portuguese province, Macao, China. He became a citizen of the United States in 1876. In August 1849, Guiterrez left Manila for Hong Kong in the Barkentine "Clavilleno", with Captain Surapeo San Juan de Santa Cruz. That same month he left Hong Kong for California. After a month long stay in Honolulu for ship repairs, they arrived in San Francisco in November 1849. Guiterrez had brought frame or panel wooden houses with him that he planned to build at the corner of California and Webb Streets. After many failed attempts he chose to invest in property in "Elizaville", only later to return to homebuilding in San Francisco. He later opened a slaughterhouse at the Potrero of San Pablo in Contra Costa County. Financial and legal problems caused Guiterrez to abandon this endeavor. He later became re-involved in homebuilding in San Francisco, which also ended in legal problems. From there he went on to mine speculating, one called "La Esparanza" and another called "Hidalgo". This ended upon discovery that more lead than silver was being found. Candido Guiterrez was appointed Secretary of the "Leota Consolidated Gold and Silver Mining Smelting and Water Company", an incorporation of seven mines in Inyo County. Guiterrez again met with legal and financial trouble due to his involvement with the "Surprise Valley Mill and Water Company"
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p.94-104, Vol. 1. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's Biographical File. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes, but there is no longer a photograph of this member in our collection. This reminiscence begins with a description of Guiterrez' 1849 passage to San Francisco. It offers a particularly vivid account of his first nights in San Francisco, where he met with some hardships due to inclement weather and overall challenging circumstances. Financial information is provided, as are cost of provisions and the worth of gold. Guiterrez goes into detail regarding some of his financial and legal troubles, especially those concerning his involvement in mining companies.
