Autobiography & Reminiscence of Henry Beeckman Livingston, (Deceased), 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Henry Beeckman Livingston was born on August 19, 1825 in Litchfield, Connecticut, and growing up in Rochester, New York, he graduated from Williams College in 1847. After the discovery of gold, he left on the "Christoval Colon" from New York to San Francisco. Its thirty-some passengers were mostly from prominent New York families. After damages in a storm off Cape Hatteras, the "Christoval Colon" stopped in Rio de Janeiro for repairs, where Livingston boarded the "Panama" for S.F. After stops in Chile, Peru, and Panama, the ship entered San Francisco Bay on June 4, 1849. Two days later he boarded the "Louis Perry" for Sutterville. Livingston, with 25 men, headed for the North Fork of the American River, mining below Horse Shoe Bar and other locations. In the fall of 1850 he was selected as editor for a new Whig newspaper and then worked at the Sacramento Daily Union. In 1856 Livingston mined on the North Fork of the Salmon River and later appointed District Attorney for Klamath County. Back in S.F., he became an editor of the Alta California, in 1870 edited the Oakland Transcriptand in 1880 was a U.S. Census Marshall. In his last years he was Historiographer for the Society of California Pioneers
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 169-179, Vol. 4. This is a typed transcript of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The original handwritten version exists in the member's biographical file. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes. It appears that the photographs in this set were dispersed throughout the regular photography collection, but the photographs referenced in the related materials may or may not be these same photographs. The text begins with a memorial on Livingston, written by J.P. Behring, describing his funeral. The reminiscence was submitted to the Society by J.P. Behring, but written by Livingston in 1887. He names travel companions and college classmates later to be prominent citizens of California. A family history is also included. Livingston describes his journey to California from New York, his experiences mining and later, working in the newspaper industry.
