Description
An unidentified man is reaping (cutting) wheat with a machine designed to be operated by just one or two men and a team of horses. Sheaves are visible in the foreground of the photograph. In this method of harvest the wheat stalks with the heads of wheat (seeds) still attached would be gathered and bound into a sheaf (bundle) and then set upright in the field. These would be left for a few days to allow remaining moisture to evaporate before the wheat was separated from the chaff. Some wheat continued to be grown near Turlock and other areas after the availability of irrigation water that enabled broad diversification of the agriculture in Stanislaus County.
