Written on back of photograph, "During Roosevelt Administration, the Department of Interior made survey[Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering REcord], photographed, prepared specs and filed for reference of those who want to build similarly. Fountain installed over 75 years ago." Sheffield residence, located at 506 North Los Angeles Street (now Anaheim Blvd.) at Sycamore Street, Anaheim; house was built circa 1884 by S.A. Sheffield, wealthy English sportsman, for his country home; architect and contractor was Chris Stappenback, who also built the Pico Hotel in Los Angeles; purchased in 1939 by Edward P. Backs and in 1948 served as the offices of the Associated Farmers of Orange County; demolished after 1961; image shows front facade of two-story brick Second Empire style house, with covered front porch and mansard roof with three dormers; visible in foreground is an ornate water fountain.
