Description
Riotous crowd of men on Market Street Wharf surround gallows where Stuart stands awaiting execution with noose around his neck. Rowboats on water, men climbing in rigging of a ship and standing on adjacent buildings to watch execution.
Handwritten title (LR): Vigilance Committee Hanging, Ja[me]s Stuart, San Francisco, July 11, 1851. Signature (LL, within image): Taber. Probably an illustration for magazine article in The Century.
