Description
Cover is a color photo of two tigers, with the text "San Diego Zoo" appearing above them. While much of the textual content mirrors previous publications, the stylistic format of this guide is a radical departure the previous editions, and reflects the Zoo entering a more modern era. Documents the founding of the Zoological Society of San Diego and the San Diego Zoo's early growth and development in San Diego's Balboa Park. The San Diego Zoological Garden is unique among most United States zoos in that it exhibits nearly all animal outdoors the year around. Admission costs one dollar for adults, but children up to 16 years are admitted free. The guide includes general information about the Zoo, a section about the Children's Zoo, mammals, reptiles, birds, and the history of the Zoo. A new section in this guide is the color portfolio in the middle, which depicts photographs of the Zoo's many inhabitants. The history section includes information on service and membership, the Zoo's dedication to children, the Zoo school, the Zoo's publications, membership, and bequests. A new section included within history is the Institute for Comparative Biology alongside the Zoological Hospital. Trained seals perform in the Wegeforth Bowl, named for the Zoo's founder, on the A-Mesa every day throughout the year. A new map is included in the general information section, in black and white, with clear paths marked with an alphanumerical legend. Unlike the other maps included in previous versions of the Zoo Guidebook, no animals are pictured.
