Description
First edition, giraffe with palms and eucalyptus illustration on cover .25 cents. Provides a snapshot of the world famous San Diego Zoo during this time period and documents the founding of the Zoological Society of San Diego. It includes the San Diego Zoo's early growth and development in San Diego's Balboa Park, including its origins in the 1915-1916 Panama Exposition and credits Ellen Browning Scripps's generous support. Innovations include the guided bus tour, "unique among zoos...." The guide mentions the "favorable climatic conditions," admittedly a significant advantage compared to some other zoos, and also includes innovations in facilities, nutrition and other areas of scientific research as key to the San Diego Zoo's success. Directions to the Zoo note "Laurel Street closed at present for military reasons," and the average daily attendance in 1942 was more than two thousand per day. Street cars, no longer extant, are listed in "How to Reach the Zoological Garden of San Diego." A zoo map is on the inside front cover, depicting the canyons and mesas. This is the first appearance of the one page Sketch Map of the San Diego Zoological Garden, which depicts the location of animals per their Mesa location. Numerous animals residing in the park are pictured and described throughout the guide, including: "Ngagi, our Mountain Gorilla, in a retrospective mood," King Snake, Cobra, Sidewinder, Monitor, Iguana, Water Dragon, Gila Monster, Snapping Turtle, Box Turtle, Lowland Gorilla, Colobus Monkey, Mona Guenon, Hanuman Monkey, Red Lutong, Crested Macaque, White-Throated Ringtail, Ringtailed Lemur, Gray Gibbon, Orang-utan, Chimpanzee, Lowland Gorilla, Saddlebacked Tapir, Hippopotamus, Indian Elephants, Baird's Tapir, Wallaby, Giant Anteater, Armadillo, Capybara, Paca or Spotted Cavy, Grevy Zebra, Grant Zebra, Chapman's Zebra, American Bison, Rocky Mountain Sheep, Barbary Sheep, White-bearded Gnu, Eland, Water Buck, Fallow Deer, Wapiti or American Elk, Bactrian Camel, Guanaco, Barasingha Deer, California Bob Cat or Lynx, Kadiak Bear, Spectacled Bear, Northern Fur Seal, African Lion, African Lioness with Young, Spotted Leopard, Cheetah or Hunting Leopard, Canadian Lynx, Ocelot, Western Badger, Lesser Panda, Red Fox, African Crested Porcupine, Java Warty Pig, African Wart Hog, "A Rare and Short-Lived Exhibit, the Monkey-Eating Eagle," Emu, Double-Wattled Cassowary, Peruvian Pelican, Marabou Stork, Jabiru Stork, European Flamingo, Great White Egret, Screamers, Sun Bittern, Wild Fowl Pool, Black Swan, Black-Necked Swan, "Birds of Prey Cage," Andean Condor, Crowned Eagle, Bald Eagle, Spectacle Owl, Vulturine Guineafowl, Crowned Cranes, Demoiselle Crane, "Scripps Shore Bird Cage," Victoria Crowned Pigeon, Yellow-Streaked Lory, Scarlet Macaw, Motmot, Giant Kingfisher, Great Toco Toucan, Red-Billed Toucan, Swainson's Toucan, and the Wreath-Billed Hornbill.
