Description
This book documents the activities of the Sierra Club's eighth annual Base Camp outings held in 1947 at Big Pine Creek, North Palisade Glacier within the John Muir Wilderness region in the central Sierra Nevada of California. This trip was divided into two sessions, with each group spending two weeks at the Base Camp location; the first camp was from July 20th to August 2nd, and the second from August 3rd to August 16th. The book documents the activities of the campers during both Base Camp sessions, including diary excerpts, botanical and bird study tours, drawings, astronomy accounts, and flora and fauna lists. Additionally, there are a number of poems and other creative writings from campers inspired by the sites and sounds of the trip. The book also documents mountain peaks that were mapped and/or climbed by campers. Included in the book is a photograph titled 'Palisade Crest and Glacier from Sam Mack Lake' by J.W. MacBride, as well as a map of the North Palisade Glacier region.
